The land that is now known as Prairie Village, Kansas, was once owned by the Osage, Shawnee, and Kansa Native Americans. Then in 1858, the Porter family decided to settle in the area. Thomas Porter purchased one-hundred and sixty acres of farmland and raised his children there. His sister Betty Lewis and her husband, as well as Henry Coppock also bought land in the area, built homes, and raised families. Then, J.C. Nichols bought farmland from the Coppocks, Lewises, and Porters in the 1940s and turned it into suburban housing for returning World War II soldiers. Then in 1947, the Prairie Village Shopping Center opened, and in 1955 the Corinth Square Shopping Center opened. Since then, the city has continued to grow and added State Line Road Shopping Center and Meadowbrook Shopping Center, among many other amenities and attractions.
